The Eight Immortals Cross the Sea
Introduction
In Chinese mythology, there are many stories about immortals and their adventures. One of the most famous tales is that of the Eight Immortals Crossing the Sea. This story tells us about eight immortal beings who embark on a journey across a vast sea to reach their home in heaven.
The Journey Begins
According to legend, these eight immortals were once ordinary people who lived on earth. They were all very kind and generous, helping others without expecting anything in return. As a reward for their good deeds, they were chosen by heaven to become immortals.
Each of them had unique skills and abilities that made them special. There was Hei Bao (Black Toad), who could turn into a black toad at will; Cao Guojiu (Old Man Cao), who was an expert in martial arts; Li Tieguai (Iron Crutch Li), who could heal any wound with his magical crutch; Han Xiangzi (Han Zhongli), who could control plants with his magic wand; Zhang Guolao (Zhang Daoling), who had nine lives like a cat; Lü Dongbin (Lü Zhiyuan), known as "the sword saint"; Zhongli Quan, also known as "the three-legged cauldron man"; and Lan Caihe, whose beauty captivated everyone he met.
One day, these eight immortals decided it was time for them to go back home – Heaven – but they found out that there was no boat available for such a long distance journey across the sea.
A Magical Boat
Suddenly, an old man appeared before them offering his help. He said he would provide them with a magical boat if they promised not to tell anyone how it worked or where it came from when they reached heaven.
They agreed and thanked him sincerely.
The old man disappeared after giving them directions on how to find him later.
