据说元末有一何五路，为抵御外寇而死，人们因此祀他为神，名“五路神”。但此五路神似乎与作为财神的路头五路神无涉。或又以五路神实为五圣神，或曰五通神，在康熙年间汤斌毁禁上方山 五通寺以后，民间不敢祀 五通 神，故改其名为 路头 而祀之。一般以此 路头 为古 五 祀 中 的 行 神，所谓 五 路 乃 东 西 南 北 也; 财货 无 不 凭 路 而 行，故人们 以 行 神 为 财 神，谨 加 祭祀，冀 求 它 引 财 入 门，或 出 行 获 利。
在《封仙演义》中，_five_指的是赵公元帅、招宝天尊萧升、纳珍天尊曹宝、招财使者陈九公和利市仙官姚少司。在民间所供財的中，不管是赵公元帅，是赐福天官身边总要配以利市仙官(一位），因此，这位利市仙官可说是地地道道的一位偏財。有关利市仙官的來歷，在《封皇演義》中有記載：本名姚少司，是大財主赵公明的徒弟，被姜子牙封為迎祥納福之靈。所謂“利市”包含三重含義：一是指做買賣時得到的收益;二是指吉祥與運氣;三是指喜慶或節日如壓歲錢等。人們信奉他，是希望得利市財保佑生活幸福美滿，一切如意。
